Very Promising

Staton is a ‘very promising’ (Thomas Spiekerman 2011, Live XS Magazine) emerging Dutch SoulFunkRock fusion band that has been taking the Netherlands by storm. With their charming redhaired frontwoman Lara Mol, easy stage presence and soulful sounds Statons’ performances are filled with energy. Lara’s voice and sense of humor on stage add a special dynamic to their performance. (In) formation

The five-pieced band Staton is named after Candi Staton the American soul and gospel singer. The band was founded by Lara Mol, the lead singer/songwriter in June 2010 who was soon joined by bassist Luc Pustjens, drummer Niels Nuiver, gitarist Michiel Claessen and keyboardist Leon den Engelsen. The result: the formation of a band of talented and inspired young musicians and of dedicated youngsters, that have since proven ‘to have a lot of potential’ (Michella Kuijkhoven, 3voor12 Den Haag).

The Staton Sound

Staton’s sound is an appealing melting pot of soul, funk, rock that also incorporates other musical styles like pop and jazz. Staton fuses all these genres into their own catchy Staton sound. For these young musicians music has no boundaries although you can clearly hear their magnetism towards funk and soul. Their inspiration comes from artists from labels like Motown and Stax. Think of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Candi Staton,. Other influences on Statons sound are The Doors, Steve Winwood, Lenny Kravitz but also Amy Winehouse, Jessie-J, Selah Sue, Ryan Shaw and John Legend.

Hit the ground running

Within four months after the band was founded, and after sending Ryan Shaw a demotape of the bands recordings, Shaw asked Staton to support him on his tour in The Netherlands. During 5 concerts Staton opened for Shaw, who was so enthusiastic about the young band that he added a duet with Staton leadsinger Lara to his live set. They performed the song People Get Ready together at 3 of 5 shows in the Netherlands. Supporting Shaw was just the beginning: In 2011 Staton was the support act of funklegends Tower of Power (US), Waylon (NL) , Schradinova (NL) and Mama’s Gun (UK). A great and running start of their first year as a band.

Debutalbum 

In May 2011 the band released their debut-album named Indecisive. The twelve tracks are all ‘easy on the ears’  (Thomas Spiekerman 2011, Live XS Magazine) and ‘very fitting for a sweltery summer night’ (Suzanne Jekel 2011, Plug Out). Lara co-wrote all songs together with the band and in cooperation with several established songwriters like Martijn Konijnenburg,Orfeo Bouman, Marc Bien, Llewy is Sell ,Bart Possemis en Delivio Reavon.The debut-album is available on I-Tunes, Spotify and through Go! Entertainment/Rough Trade (Benelux). Staton presented the album in a packed concert hall at Amsterdam’s Pop Temple Paradiso. Since they’ve started touring Holland in 2010 Staton has already played over 70 gig’s (www.statonmusic.nl/agenda) in less then a year and simultaneously the band is working on new material for a second album.

Airplay

Their second single “Prove my love” entered several playlists at Dutch radio and the video was on medium rotation at TMF for several weeks. In addition to that the video is selected by The First Class Broadcasting Corporation in the USA for airplay on the Internet music video station they are about to launch.

Nieuw Nederlands nu-soultalent

Nieuw nu-soultalent uit Nederland is schaars. Toch staat er af en toe een nieuwe artiest op die de gevestigde orde op z’n grondvesten doet trillen. De band Staton is een goed voorbeeld van zo’n veelbelovende act. Nog maar net een paar maanden samen en nu al een sterke single uit en Nederlands voorprogramma van de Amerikaanse soulartiest Ryan Shaw.

Drijvende kracht achter de band Staton is de 22-jarige Amsterdamse zangeres Lara Mol. Zij was op zoek naar een gretige groep talentvolle muzikanten. En vond er een aantal bij de Tilburgse Rockacademie. Het resultaat mag er zijn. Een groep sterke muzikanten die met veel lol en passie elke zaal compleet in vervoering weet te brengen. En ook in de studio precies de juiste sound weet te creeëren.

Hedendaags randje

,,Stoere nu-soul gecombineerd met rock, funk en motown, ligt ons diep aan het hart.”, vertelt Lara Mol gepassioneerd over haar nieuwe band. De jonge zangeres met Gooise roots doet alles met een sterk gevoel. Volgens het talent mag de muziek best een beetje ouderwets zijn, als het maar gebracht wordt met een hedendaags scherp randje.

Nederlandse artiesten waar de frontvrouw en haar band veel inspiratie uit halen passen in het rijtje van Waylon en Alain Clark. ,,Maar we willen wel vooral ons eigen ding doen.”, aldus de jonge zangeres Mol. Dat de bandnaam afstamt van de grote Amerikaanse zangeres Candy Staton mag natuurlijk geen verrassing zijn.

Intermenselijke relaties

Mol probeert in haar teksten net zulke diepgang te vinden als de Amerikaanse gospel- en soulllegende. Ze zingt over alles wat haar bezighoudt. Belangrijke thema’s die ze in haar songs aansnijdt zijn liefde en andere intermenselijke relaties. Zo zingt ze in haar eerste single ”Glitter Ain’t Gold” (I-Tunesrelease 8 okt) over dat mensen zich soms anders voor willen doen.

Het komende najaar wordt er door de band hard gewerkt aan een pakkend debuut. De frontvrouw heeft liedjes geschreven samen met Martijn Konijnenburg, Orfeo Bouman, Marc Bien, Llewy is Sell en Delivio Reavon, maar ook met alle bandleden in de eigen studio. En het resultaat mag er zijn. Van passievolle ballads tot steviger songs met een rock randje. Veelbelovend materiaal van een jonge en frisse groep muzikanten.

Debuutalbum

Staton nam al een aantal tracks op met Konijnenburg (Tienus) en Skiggy Rapz en heeft ook geluidstechnicus en producer Okkie Huysdens gestrikt om komend najaar de studio in te gaan. Samen zullen zij proberen in de nieuwe Almeerse studio van John van Eijk een indrukwekkend debuutalbum neer te zetten. Aan de muzikanten kan het volgens de zangeres niet liggen. ,,Alle puzzelstukjes vallen in elkaar bij deze groep.”, aldus Mol.

Het debuut wordt in eigen beheer uitgegeven. Komt beschikbaar op I-Tunes en wordt op cd uitgebracht via een internationale distributeur. Als het album zo sterk wordt als iedereen nu al vermoedt, dan zal hopelijk iedereen voor Staton in de rij staan. Succes heeft de band volgens de frontvrouw op voorhand al weten te bereiken, want:,,Het is een hele fijne band waarmee we precies de liedjes kunnen maken die we willen.”
